Raquel’s Research

Methods and books
Dear parents,

Just an update concerning my sabbatical: My research is going well and I am making progress! It takes continuous work and thought, but it is also immensely rewarding.

Also, my participation in the music project Krachtig Meesterschap at the Royal Conservatoire is delivering its fruits.

There is still a long way to go, but I will keep you posted concerning short courses or new classes.

Hope you had a happy Easter and enjoy the sunny days of this "May Vacation"!

Sincerely,

Raquel

Behold . .. the Power of Music!

Researchabout music and childrenx92s development is truly jaw-dropping.

In the lastcouple of years, the eyes of the research community have turned increasingly tomusic, and the marvels and mysteries they have discovered are nothing short ofamazing (though perhaps not exactly surprising to people whox92ve regularlywitnessed its effect). The bottom line: early, positive, age-appropriateexperiences with music can have a remarkable and research-proven impact onchildrenx92s learning, including language and literacy skills (e.g., vocabulary, comprehension, listening, expression); social and emotional development;mathematics and pattern-recognition skills; and even ability to plan, guide, and self-regulate behavior.

What do yousay? Ready for music class? Yeeeees!!

See you inclass!

Musicalgreetings,

Raquel

Music in the Making

Article about Raquelx92s music classes in The Local Expat, a newspaper for ex-pats in TheHague

BabyMusic and Kindermusik with Raquel are music and movement programsfor newborns and children up to seven years and are given in English. Parentsaccompany their children on a musical journey that awakens the senses andstimulates creativity. Babies are introduced early on to the benefits ofclassical music and the joys of hearing lullabies and nursery rhymes. Olderchildren play instruments and dance to the beat of an international selectionof music. The class provides a comfortable environment in which everyone isencouraged to let loose and have fun.

Raquel is an accomplished pianist who strives to give children a giftthey can take with them anywhere. x93Music makes you feel alive; it awakenssomething in the soul,x94 she explains. While studies have shown that some musicdevelops the brain, she is convinced that it can be experienced holistically.Activities x93promote independence and bonding with the parent,x94 she asserts. They also build a childx92s, and sometimes a parentx92s, confidence.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Raquel settled in the Netherlandswith her Dutch husband after studying piano performance in the US. She is nostranger to the unique issues confronting expats. x93You can feel very lonelyhere, so completely out of place, especially if you have small children,x94 sheexplains. Thatx92s where her music classes come in. Parents learn different waysof interacting with their children, while also interacting with other adults.Raquelx92s music classes brighten up the gray days that accompany an expatx92sadjustment to Dutch culture.
